Window Wells 101: The Small Basement Feature That Can Prevent a Big Water Problem
Basement window wells are easy to overlook. They’re small, outside the main living space, and often hidden behind landscaping. But when a window well isn’t draining properly, it can collect enough water to turn a heavy Missouri rainstorm into a basement leak. A little routine attention can make a big difference.
What Is a Window Well Supposed to Do?
A window well holds soil away from a below-grade basement window, allowing light into the basement and providing space around the window opening. Many wells also contain gravel and may have a drainage system designed to move water away.
Problems begin when that drainage path becomes blocked or overwhelmed.
Leaves, mulch, dirt, sticks, and other debris can accumulate inside the well. During heavy rain, water may then collect faster than it can drain. If the water rises high enough, it can press against the window and eventually find its way around the frame or through other vulnerable areas.
A Few Minutes of Maintenance Can Help
Check your window wells periodically, especially after storms and during the fall when leaves and debris accumulate quickly. Remove anything covering the gravel or drain and look for signs that water has been sitting in the well.
A properly fitted window well cover can also help keep out leaves and debris while limiting the amount of rainwater entering the well. Just remember that a cover isn’t a substitute for good drainage. If water from your roof, downspouts, or yard is consistently flowing toward the window well, the source of that runoff also needs attention.
When a Window Well Leak Points to a Bigger Issue
One flooded window well doesn’t necessarily mean you have a major basement problem. Repeated water accumulation, however, may indicate poor grading, inadequate drainage, or excessive water collecting around the foundation.
If water is repeatedly finding its way into your basement, Missouri Basement can help determine whether the window well is the primary problem or a symptom of a larger drainage or waterproofing issue.
